Well, it is downright scary the number of respected film critics out there who are biting the dust. They are literally dropping like flies these days. Now word is that Newsweek has offered buyouts to tonnes of its staff and David Ansen has accepted the offer, so out he goes.
It makes you wonder about the whole state of film criticism if this is what it's come to, critics leaving newspapers and magazines in droves. That link said that Nathan Lee got the boot from the Village Voice, among other critics.
Well, there's always the Web as an option for these guys, right? Not a good time to be a film critic.
UPDATE: Here's a piece in the NY Times about the state of affairs with all these critics leaving all at once. Why would film freaks even want to buy newspapers if they can't get decent film writing? Good question.
