MORE USELESS NEWS

Well, things at THE CAIRNS BLOG ought to be back to normal, soon- once I finally shell out for a new computer. I was hoping to get it over with earlier this week but I just haven't had the time. Busy, busy.

And in other news- are you all as shocked as I was by that Owen Wilson suicide attempt on the weekend? Wow.

HOLLYWOOD JUSTICE

Have been getting a laugh in recent days over these legal pundits and Hollywood-watchers going on all these talk shows. They are all insane because Lindsay Lohan is apparently not going to face cocaine charges, and because Nicole Richie only served, what, an hour in jail?

These folks like Nancy Grace were frothing at the mouth over this, saying how these people should be locked up and that they were dangers to society. And so on.

I laugh at all this. Instead of going after these Hollywood party freaks, why doesn't Nancy and the gang go nuts over real criminals? You know the kind- murderers, armed robbers, car thieves-- those guys. Going after Nicole and Lindsay seems like a waste of time to me.

But it sure is good for the TV ratings.

In other news I noticed that Anchorwoman, that FOX show featuring fake wannabe TV news anchor Lauren Jones trying to do the news in Tyler, Texas, has been cancelled after just one week. Hey, it's all my fault. I forgot to tune in.

DEAN!

"Don't tell me THE CAIRNS BLOG is back with more hurricane coverage", you all must be thinking. Yes, I am back with more bad news.

Here's CNN's account of Hurricane Dean bearing down on Jamaica. Fun stuff, not. Next stop after that, Cancun. Again.

Time to cancel the vacations.

TV RANTS IN MID-AUGUST

I still have no Internet at home, but don't worry. I still have my TV and that's all that really matters. TV is truly one thing no one can do without, as I have found out quickly. But computers? Who cares. The Internet, I can do without for a while. Miss my favorite shows on TV? That I cannot do.

But I haven't been watching too much of this summer dreck this year-- junk like Hell's Kitchen and Big Brother, and So You Think You Can Dance. Plus there's all those new singing shows, too. The Singing Bee and all that junk. Who needs it.

Not all the offerings are bad, though. Any of you watch The Power of 10? They poll the people out there in the US on all sorts of insane questions, and the contestants have to guess how many people answered these poll questions a certain way.

There are only five questions you need to get right to win 10 million bucks, but it's harder than it looks. Lots of people have gone down the tubes early in this game, because nobody knows what these people out there in America are thinking!

But nobody really goes home with nothing, you just go home with 1/10th of what you got. The power of 10-- get it? At least it's original, which is more than what you can say for all these other game shows where you risk it all and go home with nothing all the time.

Drew Carey hosts and he's pretty good on this show. But I wonder why they are putting this stuff on in prime time. This stuff really needs to go in daytime, where it belongs, and leave prime time to the sitcoms (which they don't put on anymore, I notice). But I guess daytime is reserved for Oprah these days, so they have to put the game shows somewhere. And whatever happened to real game show hosts? These days the hosts are all standup comedians like Carey, and Jimmy Kimmel and Howie Mandel. Weird.

And everyone on these entertainment shows like ET and Access Hollywood is boohooing the death of legendary talk show host Merv Griffin. Well, at least that's better than seeing them cover Britney Spears and all her problems.

That's it for now.

MORE NEWS FROM NOWHERE: MERV GRIFFIN DIES, AND OTHER STUFF

Sorry about the intermittent posts here at the blog; the latest problem is that now I'm having computer issues at home. Darnet.

Anyway, I'm still doing as much posting as I can, it's just going to have to be fewer in number for a few more days.

In other news from nowhere:
Answer: This rich celebrity who produced a lot of game shows just died.
Question: Who is Merv Griffin? You are correct.

In auto racing news from the IRL, I noticed Dario Franchitti crashed again.

Also, I saw Rush Hour 3 and can confirm to you that the movie is not too good. Just a mess, and with three times the usual stupidity. These two guys Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan have had it.

That's all for now.

NEWS FROM NOWHERE

Welcome back to THE CAIRNS BLOG with some random news and views from me about things that have been going on during the time I've been gone from the blog.

TV NEWS JUNK

Ahem. Paula Zahn has signed off at CNN.
Also, noticed Rupert Murdoch finally won his bid to take over the Wall Street Journal so I wonder what it means for his new Fox Business Network, hee hee hee.

Also, Tom Snyder died last week, which is too bad because I used to watch his show on CBS and his radio show on ABC. It's funny because I remember him from that and not from his Tomorrow Show days.

Other grim TV news news: I noticed there was a blurb on one of these TV news sites somewhere which stated that "a prominent LA anchor" was off the air due to cancer, and my thought was "don't tell me Hal Fishman has cancer."

Turns out Hal Fishman did have cancer- colon cancer, diagnosed only a few days ago. Now just today, I found out he died. Wow, that was quick. Here's the story from SFGate and the link to KTLA. That's too bad, I used to see him anchor the news when my cable had KTLA from LA. Grim news.

SPORTS NEWS

Noticed that Kevin Harvick won the Montreal NASCAR Busch race but I didn't have too much of a chance to follow the race this year due to various other commitments I've had. I did notice the lineup of that race was a very strange one- all these guys who fled CART. Patrick Carpentier, Max Papis etc.

Incidentally, why the heck was this race such a big deal? It was only the BUSCH Series, people, and what's worse, lots of no-names and Canadians were competing in it.

And everyone in Toronto was booing because David Beckham didn't play in that MLS game against FC the other night. Well, what do you expect from him? Big celebrity! I'm convinced he's in this league just to hang out in Hollywood. Who cares about the fans.

Barry Bonds finally hit 755 and it's been neat seeing these stations carry his every at-bat. Now I'm waiting for him to hit 756 and get the record over with before he is indicted.

BOX OFFICE STUFF

Noticed THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM did pretty well to the tune of $70 mil its opening weekend.

OTHER STUFF

Finally, it was sad and scary news last week with the Minnesota bridge collapse in the Twin Cities. It's actually a big issue everywhere, these bridges. Crumbling infrastructure is a huge issue these days. People worry their local bridge will be the next to fall apart. Anyway, that was quite shocking.

That's it for now.

STILL ON VACATION FROM THE BLOG

THE CAIRNS BLOG is still on an extended leave. Bear with me, this is what happens when you stay in a hotel.

In the meantime, check out my box-office rant about how well The Simpsons Movie did at the theaters on the weekend. Woo hoo!
